The scriptures tell us there must be opposition in all things, for without it we could not discern the sweet from the bitter. Would the marathon runner feel the triumph of finishing the race had she not felt the pain of the hours of pushing against her limits?

Monster Month

This was in my inbox. This is what I have to look forward too.

Hello Theresa,

Your Workouts for Sunday, July 24
Workout #1: Week 9 REST
Type: Day Off
This is week nine of training. After this week, race day will be seven weeks away.

Today you'll enter the stage of training known as Monster Month. It incorporates some of your longest runs and your most intense workouts. Don't worry; if you've followed the program so far, you've developed the cardiovascular and muscular base you'll need to handle these tougher efforts. Just try to stick to the mileage and pace that are prescribed for each day. That way you'll have the energy for the quality workouts.

This week you'll incorporate a little more fast running into your training. On tomorrow's easy run, you'll add strides, short bursts of speed that will help you pick up the pace on race day.

On Thursday you'll have your first tempo run, during which you'll practice holding a faster pace for a longer distance. This will help you develop the speed endurance you'll need for the race. You'll have a goal-marathon-pace run on Friday. Your long run will inch up to 16 miles.

Yay! I'm bursting with excitement to be entering Monster Month. Too bad you can't hear the sarcasm in my typing.
